MX Visual Evaluation Test Form

At the end of the wizard to create a profile the option is offered to print the Visual Evaluation Test Form. The option will print the form.

All test objects are numbered on the chart. You will find a detailed explanation for all objects in the following table:
  1. Color density bars
    Solid bars in the primary colours to determine whether a stable color tone is printed across the sheet.
  2. Test images
    Test images with a lot of detail and mixed colours are used to visually assess the profile quality.
    Grayscale images reflect the selected separation settings. You can use the images to check the grey balance.
  3. Spot colours
    Common spot colours known to tests the limits of the gamut of the printer. In gamut spot colours should be produced spot-on and out-of-gamut colours should be retaining their brightness. All spot colour reproductions must be as uncontaminated as possible with a low black generation.
  4. CMYK background
    The grey 4c background serves to evaluate the homogeneity of the print. Attention should be paid to an overall smoothness of the background. There should be no color shifts or banding.
  5. Type
    Type reveals any font or color replacement in the printer front end. It also reveals whether the printer front end applies anti-aliasing or not. Anti-aliasing might negatively affect the profile quality. Test charts should be printed without anti-aliasing.
  6. QR codes
    QR codes are printed using 100% K and show is bleed is present.
  7. Stroke
    Strokes with different weights are used to check the print resolution. Comparing the test chart to recent reference prints can help to detect any printer deviations. If strokes with the same weight appear to be different with respect to the dark or light background they are printed on, this might be caused by frontend parameters. This might falsify measurement results and thus negatively affect the profile quality.
  8. Siemens stars
    Siemens stars are a very useful pattern to check the resolution of a printer. The pie-shaped bright spokes of the stars on a dark background become narrower towards the center of the star. The higher the resolution of the printer, the closer to the center of the star they will appear to merge. Comparing the test chart to recent reference prints can help to detect any printer deviations. Artefacts at the border of the stars are an indication of a frontend optimisation  Such an optimisation has a detrimental effect when it comes to printing characterisation charts and might negatively affect the profile quality.
  9. Overinking
    For evaluating the ink-limit and overinking. These are only to be evaluated when using the Contone drivers or when the PDF / TIFF or PostScript driver acts as a front-end of a 3rd party RIP. In those cases the ink-limiting is not fully controlled by PrintFactory but by the Contone module or 3rd party RIP.
  10. Linear Gradations
  11. Radial Gradations
    The gradations reflect the smallest printable dot. Furthermore, you can check the linearity of your printing system. If the gradations show any breaks, the printer linearisation might not be sufficient.
    The gradations will also reveal gradation breaks or solarisations that might be caused by the profile. The grey gradation strips can be used to evaluate the neutral grey.
