Concept

The Color Mapping tool is used to map one color to another (e.g. RGB color to a Spot color). The tool allows to set-up a list of specific color edits for the following cases:

  • Jobs sometimes do come in with the company colors already flattened to CMYK or RGB and need to be converted again to Spot Colors so they can be calibrated, tuned and kept consistent across several medias.

  • Jobs sometimes need a specific tweak, for example making a red part 100% M + 100% Y on the printer without affecting the whole print using a Pure Hue profile variant.

  • Jobs contain localized names that do not match-up the English names of the inks used in the RIP. For example “Weiß” needs to be mapped to “White” in order to map the the white ink channel.

  • Jobs contain multiple spelling variations of spot colors that all need to map to the same spot color.

Usually those edits are linked to a specific customer that always delivers the jobs in a certain way that it needs the same edits. Therefore this tools allows to store a series of edits into a file named a Color Mapping.

To address the full gamut of the printer it is needed and handy to map to a spot color first. In case of a color-tweak this can be a custom named spot color. Then in the PMM that spot color is defined in the printer inks allowing a precise mapping from a color to a certain ink mixture on the printer.

This intermediate step is needed and wanted because:

  • Mapping from a color to CMYK will be defined in the standard that is selected, for example ISO Coated or GRACol and thus not in the printer inks directly.

  • Having the color as a spot color allows to address the full gamut of the printer.

  • A spot color can be tuned and is calibrated, so it will stay consistent over time and resistant against color shifts in the printer.

  • A spot color can be defined in different media PMMs with different mixtures. So there is no need to make a specific Color Mapping for each media.

Color Mappings are mostly used from/deployed in the Editor, the Calibrator functions are used for detailed editing and maintaining the Color Mappings. The RIP always deploys the Color Mapping name “Default” on each job.

Note:

  • This tool is intended to work only with vector images (flat colors) and not raster images.

Usage

Create a color tweak using a custom spot color

  • Open PrintFactory Editor.

  • If not already visible open the Color panel from Windows > Color palette on Windows, Style panel from Windows > Style palette on MacOS.

  • Define the desired out such as 100% Cyan, 100% Magenta (these values can also be set up in RGB, HLS, etc).

Defining the output

  • If not already visible open the Color List from Windows > Color List.

  • Open the dropdown and select the New Color Mapping… option to create the new color mapping. (Or select an existing Color Mapping if the new mapping needs to be added to an existing Color Mapping)

  • Give it a descriptive name and click OK.

Define Color Map Name

  • Drag and Drop the previously defined color (100C 100M) to the Color List panel.

Color Added To The List

  • Change the name of the color from the Color List in order to be more easily identified. This is done by double clicking on the name and changing it into a new one (in this example “TheColor”).

  • In case no real art-work is used to build the Color Mapping create an object on the media (square, circle) with the color that you want to be replaced by the new color (in this example CMYK with 100% C).

  • Next drag and drop the color from the Color List directly onto the object that contains the color that needs to be replaced/mapped (or the just created object).

  • You will be prompted for a confirmation that you want to create the mapping.

Map One Color To Another

  • When the confirmation is given, also the an Output Channel is created and visible in the Output panel with the name of the new spot color.

  • If not already visible open the Output panel from Windows > Output on Windows and from Windows > Channels on MacOS.

  • As a result now a mapping from White to spot color “Burgundy” is added to the Color Mapping table named “MyColorMap”.

Using a Color Mapping

Earlier created Color Mappings can be easily deployed/used in the Editor. At the moment an existing Color Mapping is chosen all mappings will be applied on the document page that is currently open. To select an existing Color Mapping do:

  • Open (or create) a document

  • Go to Color List palette and select the Color Mapping to needs to be used.

  • Expected result: The colors of all the object should changed as configured in the Color Mapping, keeping in mind that only ‘flat’ colors of vector art-work is changed.

Editing a Color Mapping

The created color mapping can be edited using the Smart Profiler – Color Mapping Table.

  • Launch Calibrator

  • Click on the Color Mapping button.

Importing The Color Mapping

  • Click on the Open button.

  • Go to C:\Users\Public\PrintFactory\Color Mappings on Windows or /Users/Shared/PrintFactory/Color Mappings on MacOS and selected the created Color Mapping (MyColorMap.colormap in the example).

  • Click Open.

  • After opening the configuration can be seen as shown below.

  • The details can be seen and edited in the Edit Color Mapping dialog by double clicking on the line.

  • New Color Mappings can be added by clicking the + button.

  • After finishing the editing do not forget to save the results by clicking the Save button
